Gospel of Thomas - Introduction
The Gospel of Thomas is unlike the gospels of the new testament in two important respects. Firstly it has no narrative, no story line,( no virgin birth or resurrection), it is simply a list of 114 sayings attributed to IS ( Jesus ?? ) by the author of Thomas.
The other significant fact about it is that the only complete copy we have was buried before "orthodox" Christianity was established - the oldest fragment ever found being dated to the early 2nd century and the complete text from the mid 4th century (indeed it was most likely hidden because of the emerging orthodoxy instigated by Athenasius in 367 AD). Other than a few fragments of a Greek copy found in 1898, it took till 1945 before a complete text was discovered hidden in a cave at Nag Hammadi in Upper Egypt. It then took till the mid 1970's before the general public was able to read an English translation.
The Gospel of Thomas therefore offers a unique insight into a pre-Romanised mysticism, unadorned by the demands of Church and State for a politically virile and fully fleshed "religion", it simply reports a list of cryptic, paradoxical and multi-layered sayings, attributed to IS, that challenges the literalist, logical mindset and demand the development of a mystical perspective in order to make any sense to the reader - indeed developing this metanoia* seems to be the entire point of the dialogue ! Whilst we call it the Gospel of Thomas it is interesting to note that the prologue attributes it to Didymus Judas Thomas, Didymus being the Aramaic for twin and Thomas being the Hebrew for twin and one of the key themes of the text is recognising the twin selves that inhabit each of us. Judas is Greek for Judah which, in Hebrew means praise, in the sense of "praise be" or "wow, how amazing" !
Adaptions and corruptions of around half these sayings end up being used in the canonical gospels of the New Testament and attributed to Jesus and many of the translations of Thomas translate the coptic ⲓ̅ⲥ̅ as Jesus, but all we can confidently say is that it is an abbreviation (denoted by the glyph line above the letters) of I and S ( in English)
*Metanoia - Greek for a change of mind / mindset/ consciousness , is usually translated biblically as " repentance" !

We are privileged to have been granted permission by one of the worlds foremost experts on the Gospel of Thomas , Dr Martijn Linssen of Leiden University, to reproduce his 2020 translation of the Gospel of Thomas here on the Spiritual Seekers Web Site.
The unique value of this translation is that it is a literal, word for word translation from the original Coptic into English, without compromise to the different grammatical norms of English and without the cultural bias that can creep into interpreted translations.
The result is not necessarily the most beautiful or fluid English translation of Thomas, but it is the closest that an enquiring English speaking student can get to reading the exact words of that Thomas recorded.
Martijn Linssen's translation has the character of an interlinear reference resource and is probably unsuitable for those acquainting themselves with Thomas for the first time ( or even second or third times). Once you are familiar with a good interpreted translation into English, (Martijn himself recommends Detlev Koepke's as being the most reliable and we think this video is by far the easiest way to make a first acquaintance with Thomas, despite its Christian bias), then the serious student will find Martijn's pure an literal transcription from Coptic to English an invaluable resource for pinpointing exactly what the author wrote and drawing their own conclusions as to the original concepts that Thomas is reporting and recording.
The Gospel of Thomas would have been challenging even to native Coptic speakers when it was originally written, being poetic parables alluding to mystical states of consciousness (that often uses puns and clever wordplay that are largely lost in translation and time), so be kind to yourself and have no expectation of an immediate understanding of every Logion. As the document itself advises from the outset: Keep seeking till you find, prepare to be disturbed, and eventually a wonderous realisation will occur.

Lacunae dictate the flow of the phrase that they exist in, as the words that are guessed to be in them must be in the exact form and order; they are relatively few in number yet hamper legibility. Greek loanwords are capitalised because they usually (unless Coptic has no equivalent at all) convey a higher metaphysical meaning, and to prevent confusion with words that start a sentence, all sentences are decapitalised (unless they start with a Greek loanword). To distinguish between singular and plural 2nd person pronouns, the archaic English thou (thee, thy, thine) is used for 2nd person singular alone.
Prologue: these ones are the words which are hiding; IS who is living has said them, and Didymos Judas Thomas wrote them
1. and he said: he who will fall to the Interpretation of these words will not take taste of the death

5. IS said know him who is within the presence of thy outward face, and he who is hiding to thee will uncover outward to thee. there is not anyone Indeed hiding who will not reveal outward
6. they questioned him, viz. his Disciples, they said to him: does thou desire that we Fast, and what is the manner that we will pray, give Alms and Observe what within food? 15. IS said: Whenever you should behold him who they did not beget from the woman, bend you self upon your face, and you worship him: he who in there is your father

IS said: Perhaps they think, viz. the humans: I have come to cast a Peace upon the World, and they know not: I have come to cast some divisions upon the earth; a fire, a sword, a War. there are Indeed five who will come to be in a house; there are three who will come to be upon two, and two upon three: the father upon the child, and the child upon the father - and they will stand to their feet, in case they been made Single One
17. IS said: I will give to you him who no eye beheld, and him who no ear heard, and him who no hand touched, and who did not come up on the heart/mind of human
18. the Disciples said to IS: say it to us; our end, she will come to be in what manner? IS said did you uncover Indeed outward the Beginning, in order that you will seek after the end? in the place which the Beginning in-there, the end will come to be in-there. a Fortunate, he who will stand to his feet in the Beginning, and he will know the end; and he will not take taste of death
19. IS said: a Fortunate, he who has come to be at the beginning, prior to that he comes to be. if you should come to be Disciples to me, and you hear my words, these stones will Serve to you. you Indeed have in-there the five trees in Paradise; they move not, within summer, within winter, and not usually their leaves fall outward. he who will know them, will not take taste of death
20. the Disciples said to IS: say it to us; the kingdom of the heavens is comparable to what? he said to them: she is comparable to a grain of mustard, being few, More than all the seeds. Whenever However she should fall upon the earth which they do work on, habitually he puts forth outward a great branch; and he comes to be Protection of birds of the heaven
21. Mariham said to IS: thy Disci[ple]s resemble who? he said: they resemble some young children who are [vi]siting a field, which theirs not is; Whenever they should come, viz. the slaveowners of the field, they will say it: dismiss our field to us. they themselves make naked of their outward presence, to cause them to dismiss her to them; and they give their field to them. Therefore I say it: if he should understand, viz. the slaveowner in house: he is coming, viz. the man who steals; he will be awake prior to that he comes, and not permit him to excavate inward to his house of his kingdom, that he carries his House gear. yourselves However be awake at the beginning of the World; bind you upon your loins in a great Power, So that the Robbers will not fall to path to come toward you. Since there is Necessity, you look outward toward her: they will fall to her. let him come to be in your middle, viz. a human of Understanding; after that the Fruit split, he came in a hurry, his sickle in his hand; he covered him up. he who there are ears within him to hear, let him hear
22. IS beheld some little persons take milk. he said to his Disciples: these little persons who take milk are comparable to they who are going inward to the kingdom. they said to him: well then, we been made little persons, we will go inward to the kingdom? IHS said to them: Whenever you should make the two one, and if you should make the inside part in the manner of the outside part, and the outside part in the manner of the inside part, and the part ofthe heaven in the manner of the part of the ground, So that you will make the male with the woman to that one single, in order that the male will not make male, and the woman make woman. Whenever you should make some eyes to the place of an eye, and a hand to the place of their hands, and feet to the place of feet; an Image to the place of an Image: Then you will go inward [to the kingdom]
23. IS said: I will cho[os]e you, one out of thousand, and two out of ten thousand; and they will stand to their feet, in case they been made one single
24. his Disciples said: go on, show us the Place where thou are, Since Force causes us to seek after him. he said to them: he who there are ears within him, let him hear: there is light existing within the inside of a man of light, and he lights the entire World. in case he does not light, a darkness {it} is
25. IS said: love thy brother in the manner of thy Soul, Guard him in the manner of the pupil of thy eye
26. IS said: the speck which in the eye of thy brother, thou behold him; the beam However which in thy eye, thou behold him not. Whenever thou should cast the beam from thy eye, Then thou will behold outward to cast the speck from the eye of thy brother
27. in case you do not Fast to the World, you will not fall to the kingdom; in case you do not make the Sabbath {into} Father's Day(sAB'BAth), you will not behold the father
28. IS said: I stood to foot in the middle of the World, and I revealed outward to them in Flesh. I fell to them all drunk, I did not fall to anyone in them thirsting; and my Soul gave pain upon the children of the humans: some blind persons they are in their heart/mind, and they do not see: they have come to the World, they empty, they also seek to cause them come forth in the World, they empty. Nevertheless now they are being drunk; Whenever they should cast off their wine, Then they will Conceive afterwards
29. IS said if the Flesh has come to be because of Spirit, a wonder is {the flesh}; if Spirit However because of the Body, a wonder [of wonder] is {the Body}. Rather, I myself wonder this one: Ho[w] did [this] great reign of rich man dwell in this poverty?
30. IS said: the place where there are three gods, some gods are; the place where there are two Or one: I myself am existing with him
31. IS said there is no Prophet receiving in his village; not usually {a} physician Heals them who know him
32. IS said: in case they built a City from upon a mountain, in case he is high, in case she made strong: no strength can make her fall, Nor will she be able to hide
33. IS said that which thou will hear in thy ear, in the other ear proclaim it; from upon your* roofs: not usually anyone Indeed ignites a lamp, and places him at {his} ear, Nor does he place him in a hiding place. Rather, habitually he places him upon the Lampstand, in order that every one who is going inward, and who is coming forth, will behold his light
34. IS said: if a blind person should go before a blind person, habitually they fall both together, downward to a pit
35. IS said one does not have the strength to go inward to the house of the strong, and he takes him by forearm; Unless he binds his hands - Then he will turn outward his house
36. IS said there is no carrying concern, starting from morning toward evening, and starting from evening toward morning; who is it who will clothe you
37. his Disciples said: what day will thou reveal outward to us, and what day will behold thee. IS said: Whenever you should strip you of your shame, and you carry your garments, and you place them at the bottom of your feet in the manner of those little young children; and you tread them: The[n you will beh]old the child of he who is living, and you will not fear
38. IS said: many occasions you Desired to hear these words; these ones, I say them to you - and you do not have other one to hear them from his hand. there are some days that will come to be, and you seek after me - you will not fall to me

46. IS said: starting from Adam toward Johannes the Immerser, in the births of the women there is not he who is high to Johannes the Immerser So that will not break his eyes. I said it However: he who will come to be in you, been made little person, he will know the kingdom, and he will be high to Johannes
47. IS said: a human does not have the strength of being mounted on two horses, and he stretches two bows. and a slave does not have the strength to serve two slaveowners Or he will Honour the one and the other one he will Hubrize him; not usually a human drinks old wine and within the hour Desires to drink new wine; and not usually they cast new wine to old Wineskin, in order that they will not split; and not usually they cast old wine to new Wineskin So that he will not destroy him; not usually they glue old rag to fresh garment, Since Surely a split will come to be
48. IS said: should two make Peace with each other in this single house, they will say it to the mountain: turn outward - and he will turn
49. IS said: some Fortunate are the Single Ones, and who have chosen: you will fall to the kingdom: yourselves are from her, Once more you will go to the place there
50. 53. they said to him, viz. his Disciples: is the circumcision Useful Or no? he said to them: were he Useful, their father would beget them from their mother circumcised. Rather, the true circumcision in Spirit found all usefulness
54. IS said: some Fortunate are the poor: thine is the kingdom of the heavens
55. IS said: he who will not hate his father with his mother will not be able to become Disciple to me, and he who hates his brothers with his sisters and carries his Stiff drunk, he will not come to be made Of like value to me
56. IS said: he who has known the World, he fell to a Corpse; and he who has fallen to One Corpse, the World is not worthy of him
57. IS said: the kingdom of the father is comparable to a human who has in-there a seed, [goo]d. his enemy came within the night, he threw sow a Zizan[ion upo]n the good se[ed]. the human did not permit them to pluck the Zizanion, he said to them: Lest perhaps you go to pluck the Zizanion and you pluck the wheat with him. in the day Indeed of the harvest the Zizanions will reveal outward; they pluck them and they burn them
58. IS said: a Fortunate is the human who has toiled; he fell to the life
59. IS said: look after he who is living While you are living, So that you will not die and you seek to behold him, and you will not be able to find strength to behold
60. grand Samaritan; he carries a lamb, going inward to Judea. he said to his Disciples: that one is going round with the lamb. they said to him 'in order that he will kill him and he eats him'. he said to them 'While he is living he will not eat him; Rather, if he should kill him, and he comes to be a Corpse'. they said: 'he will not be able to make it be within other form'. he said to them: 'yourselves, likewise you seek after a Place to you inward, a Repose, in order that you will not come to be Corpse; and they eat you'

IS said there are two who will relieve from sickness in-there on a bed; the one will die, the one will live. said Salome 'thou who? oh human, While from one were thou raised upon my bed, and did thou eat from my Table'. IS said to her: 'myself is he who is existing from him who has scattered them; I will come forth in those of my father'. 'myself thy Disciple because of this one, I say it: 'Whenever he should come to be deserted, he will be full light; Whenever However he should come to be divided, he will be full of darkness''
62. IS sa[id]: I say my Mysteries to [them who are worthy of my M]ysteries; [that] w[h]ich thy right will do, there is no way to make thy left understand that she makes them
63. IS said: there was a Wealthy human, has he in-there many Needs. he said: I will Use my Needs, in order that I will sow, and harvest, and plant, and fill my treasures of Fruit; So that myself will not need anyone. these ones are his thoughts to them in his heart/mind; and in the night which in-there, he died.he who there are ears within him, let him hear
64. IS said: a human was having some strangers, and after that he prepared the Dinner he sent his slave So that he would summon the strangers. he went to the first, he said to him: my slaveowner summons thee. he said: I have some coppers to some Travellers, they are coming toward me to evening; I will go and lay a bid to them - I Beg off the Dinner. he went toward other one, he said to him: my slaveowner summoned thee. he said to him: I bought a house and they Ask me of a Day; I will not be at leisure. he came toward other one, he said to him: my slaveowner summons thee. he said to him: my friend will marry and I myself will make Dinner; I will not be able to come - I Beg off the Dinner. he went toward other one, he said to him: my slaveowner summons thee. he said to him: I bought a Village, I am going to take taxes; I will not be able to come - I Beg off. he came, viz. the slave, he said it to his slaveowner: those that thou have summoned to the Dinner, they Begged off. the slaveowner said to his slave: go to the outside part, to the paths: they who thou will fall to, bring them, in order that they will Dine; the men who buy with the trad[ers, they will go inward] not to the Places of my father

66. IS said: go on, show me the stone, this one they have rejected, viz. they who build: he is the corner stone
67. IS said: he who knows the all, he needs himself, needs the entire place
68. IS said: yourselves are Fortunate Whenever they should hate you, and they Persecute you, and they will not fall to Place in the place where they have Persecuted you, upper part of his heart/mind
69. IS said some Fortunates are these ones who have Persecuted them, upper part in their heart/mind; they who in-there are have known the father in a truth. some Fortunates, they who are hungry, So that they will make satisfied the belly of he who desires
70. IS said Whenever you should beget that one in you, this one who you have, he will make you whole. if it befalls you do not have that one in [yo]u, this one who you do not have in you [he will k]ill you
71. IS said: I will over[turn] this house, and there is not anyone who will be able to build him [undisturbed]
72. [a human said to him]: say it to my brothers So that they wi[ll di]vide the things of my father with me. he said to him: o man who is he who has made me divider?! he went round to his Disciples, he said to them: Ain't I existing divider?
73. IS said: Whilst the harvest is much, the Workers However are few: petition However the slaveowner So that he will cast Workers outward to the harvest
74. he said: oh slaveowner, there are many going round with separation, there is not anyone However in sickness
75. IS said Surely many are standing to their feet at door of the door; Rather, the Single Ones are they who will go inward to the place of marriage
76. IS said: the kingdom of the father is comparable to a human trader who has in-there a Load; he fell to a Pearl. the trader who in-there, a wise person, gave away the Load: he bought him that one single Pearl. yourselves likewise you seek after his treasure: not usually he perishes in case he is remaining outward the place, not usually does a moth make to approach inward to the place there to eat, Nor not usually he worm destroys
77. IS said: myself is the light, this one who is from upon them all. myself is the all; the all has come forth of heart/mind, and the all has split toward me. split a wood, myself give in-there; carry the stone upward, and you will fall to me in-there
78. IS said: because of what did you come outward to the field, to behold a reed? he moves [outward] by the hand of the wind - and to behold a h[uman? there a]re smooth garments on him, [in the manner of your] kings with your Mighty ones: the [garmen]ts are smooth on these ones, and they [will] not despise {to} know the truth
79. said a woma[n] to him in the multitude: blessed is [she,] the belly, that has carried thee, and the br[eas]ts that have nourished thee. he said to [her]: blessed are they, who have heard the Word of the father, they guarded him in truth. some days Indeed will come to be, when you say it: blessed is she, the belly, this one that did not conceive, and the breasts, these ones that did not give milk

83. IS said: the Images are appearing within the human, and the light of their heart/mind is hiding in the Image of the light of the father; he will uncover outward, and his Image is hiding outward by the hand of his light
84. IS said the days you behold your likeness, habitually you rejoice; Whenever However you should behold your Images that have come to be on your beginning, Nor usually they die Nor usually they reveal outward: under how much will you bear?
85. IS said: Adam has come to be out of a great Power, with a gre[at] reign of rich man, and he did not come to be [he is w]orthy of you. Had he been one Of like value Indeed he [would have taken taste] not of the death
86. IS said[: the foxes have] the[ir caves, a]nd the birds have in-there [thei]r nests; the child However of the human does not have [a] place to incline his head and relieve him from sickness
87. he said, viz. IS: a Miserable [is] the Body which is hanging of a Body, and a M[i]serable is the Soul which is hanging of these ones both [to]gether
88. IS said: the Messengers are coming toward you, with the Prophets, and they will give to you them who you have; and yourselves likewise you give them from your hand to them and you say it to you: what day, that on which they are coming, and they take him who is theirs
